Advocate for extra large dogs is formulated specifically for dogs weight 25kg and over. Monthly treatment helps to prevent and protect your dog
from the heartworm, lungworm, gastrointestinal worms, fleas, lice, mites, demodex and sarcoptic mange skin issues.
Now you can get protection against common internal and ectoparasites – thanks to a product that safeguards against nematodes from larval to adult stages. It also controls heartworm – one of the most insidious threats to pets – as well as external parasites such as fleas, lice and mites in dogs and cats, and controls sarcoptic and demodectic mange in dogs.
Broad protection against common internal and external parasites in dogs. And it has been developed by Bayer HealthCare, the solution provider and leader in quality for efficient and cost effective parasite control. It comes as no surprise, then, that Advocate offers a whole range of important advantages never before combined in one product:
It controls all stages of hook- and roundworms – even the pre-adult forms.
Advocate safeguards not only pets, but owners and their families against the threat of zoonosis, caused by nematode transmission from infected pets. It is also safe and reliable insurance against heartworms – in many countries a key issue for pet protection.
For the treatment and prevention of flea infestation (Ctenocephalides felis), treatment of ear mite infestation (Otodectes cynotis) and prevention of heartworm disease (L3 and L4 larvae of Dirofilaria immitis).
For the treatment of sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var.canis), demodicosis (caused by Demodex canis) and treatment of infections with gastrointestinal nematodes (L4 larvae, immature adults and adults of Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala, adults of Toxascaris leonina and Trichuris vulpis).
Advocate may also be used as part of treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) in both cats and dogs. In addition, flea larvae in the pet's surroundings are killed following contact with a pet treated with the product.
It’s a relief to know that Advocate can protect animals against sources of dangerous diseases for four weeks with just one very convenient treatment.
Is administration difficult? It couldn’t be easier. Just a spot on the skin of the animal assures protection for four weeks: a single product creating a full spectrum shield that takes no more than 20 seconds to set up.
Advocate stems from the Advantage family – in other words, from Bayer HealthCare. This means you can count on not just a product, but on worldwide experience in parasite control, in-depth knowledge, superb service and the high quality Bayer HealthCare is know for. In other words, you get not simply an endectocide, but something truly outstanding: A complete, well rounded, intelligent solution.
Fleas are recognized as a major cause of skin disease for dogs and cats. However they also act as the intermediate host for the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum, and are a zoonotic parasite as well. Studies demonstrate that the moxidectin / imidacloprid combination of Advocate deliver the same high level of flea control expected from Advantage.
Infestations with lice are common in mammals and birds, as well as many other animals. In dogs, two species of lice have been reported: The mallophagean louse, Trichodectes canis, is feeds on skin dandruff and secretion from skin lesions. The anopluran louse, Linognathus setosus, is a capillary blood feeder. These lice suck blood frequently – about every couple of hours.
Sarcoptes scabiei is able to infect a wide range of mammals, with the various sub-species being relatively host-specific. The type found on dogs is Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis; this mite does not infect cats.
Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are psoroptic mites which infest the skin of the outer ear canal in both cats and dogs.
Spot on the skin of the animal assures protection for four weeks: a single product creating a full spectrum shield that takes no more than 20 seconds to set up.
Advocate combines imidacloprid and moxidectin to provide a product which delivers activity against a range of ecto- and endoparasites, such as fleas, nematodes and mites.
The recommended minimum dose for dogs is 10 mg/kg bodyweight imidacloprid and 2.5 mg/kg bodyweight moxidectin, which is equivalent to 0.1 ml/kg bodyweight of Advocate® for dogs.
| Body Weight Range (kg) |
Advocate Volume (ml) |

* For very large dogs over 40 kg body weight, application of appropriate combinations of pipettes is recommended.
Advocate is formulated as a liquid spot on solution for topical application to dogs and cats. The Advocate formulation for dogs uniquely combines 10% w/v imidacloprid (100 mg/ml) with 2.5% w/v moxidectin (25 mg/ml).
Advocate with easy to use tube applicator.
Water exposure studies have been conducted with Advocate to ascertain the effect that water immersion would have on the moxidectin component of the formulation. The residual properties and effectiveness of imidacloprid, due to its localising in the water-resistant lipid layer of the skin, are well documented.
The tip of the pipette is placed on the skin and the pipette is firmly squeezed several times to empty its contents directly onto the skin. Wherever possible, application to undamaged skin is recommended.
With the dog in a standing position, part the coat between the shoulder blades until the skin is visible. Wherever possible, apply to undamaged skin.
Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze the pipette firmly several times to empty its contents directly onto the skin.
For easy application, the dog should be standing. The entire contents of the pipette should be applied evenly as 3 to 4 spots along the top of the back, from between the shoulders to the base of the tail. At each spot, part the coat until the skin is visible. Wherever possible apply to undamaged skin.
Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and gently squeeze the pipette to expel a portion of its contents directly onto the skin. Do not apply an excessive amount of solution at any one spot, as that could cause some of the product to run down the animal's side.

Puppies were treated with Advocate at up to five times the licensed dose at two-week intervals (i.e. twice the licensed frequency of application) for a total of six treatments.
Treatment was tolerated without serious side effects, even at the highest dosage. Transient mydriasis, salivation, vomiting and rapid respiration were observed.
Adult dogs were treated topically with up to 10 times the recommended dose of Advocate at one application, with no evidence of adverse effects or undesirable clinical signs.
Studies have been performed to determine the safety of Advocate when administered to ivermectin-sensitive collies. Ivermectin-sensitive collies were treated with up to five times the recommended dose for three consecutive treatments at 28-day intervals.
There were no clinical abnormalities or adverse reactions observed in any of the dogs. Work carried out to determine the safety of accidental oral uptake of Advocate in ivermectin-sensitive breeds of dog revealed that 10% of the unit dose given orally resulted in no adverse effects, while 40% resulted in severe neurological signs.
As with any product containing macrocyclic lactones, special care should be taken with Collies, Old English Sheepdogs and related breeds or crossbreeds, to correctly administer the product. In particular, oral uptake by the recipient and/or other animals should be avoided.
Studies were carried out to establish the safety of Advocate when administered to dogs with a patent D. immitis infection. Treatment of heartworm-positive dogs with macrocyclic lactones has, in the past, been associated with adverse reactions.
These are thought to be related to the rapid death of microfilariae and adult worms, with the subsequent occurrence of emboli. Heartworm-positive dogs were treated with Advocate at both one and five times the recommended dose at 14-day intervals for three treatments.1 While there was no significant reduction in the number of adult D. immitis, importantly the treatment was found to be well-tolerated by both groups of dogs (only one dog receiving the 5x overdose vomited).
Nevertheless, in the interest of good clinical practice, it is recommended that all dogs 6 months of age or more, living in areas endemic for heartworm, should be tested for existing adult heartworm infections before being treated with the product.
Studies with Advocate have not been conducted in pregnant and lactating dogs or cats. Laboratory studies with either imidacloprid or moxidectin in rats and rabbits have not produced any evidence of teratogenic, foetotoxic or maternotoxic effects.
